Ten Tips for Writing Effective Cover Letters

Cover Letter Tips
Your cover letter can say a lot about you and it’s an important part of landing a job. Hare are ten tips you can use to craft your cover letter and land that job you are after.

Send One Always
It’s not old fashioned to send a cover letter and for each job application you should send one unless they specifically say that they don’t want one.

Clear Message
Make the message clear from the first line. Tell the employer why you are writing and when you finish use a call to action to ask the employer to call you. Sell yourself throughout the cover letter.

Mention the Company
Mention the company when you write and do a bit of research so you can include a bit of background information. Let the employer know why you are impressed by them and why you want to work there.

Show Evidence of Your Qualities
Pick out three or four of your best qualities and show the employer through the cover letter how these would benefit the organization. These should be from your résumé so your employer can see how you would apply them to the job to benefit the company. For example if you’re applying for a job on a website design team and you have experience you might say something such as “I worked on team of 6 designing websites.” Anything you have done in the past that matches the job you are applying for should be highlighted on the cover letter to gain the interest of the employer reading it.

Use Your Personality
Don’t write a dull cove letter. Use a bit of your personality in the writing and try to use acting verb to make the letter come alive. If you have people skills for example don’t put “people skills” but instead use words like “communicated” or “collaborated.” These words give your cover letter more appeal.

Make it Brief
Although you want your cove letter to include important information it also needs to be short. It should never be more than a page long. In that one page you just need to highlight some key points that matter and get the attention of the employer to read your résumé

Employer Details
Try to get the name and title of the person that will be hiring you if possible. You can call the reception desk at the business and get the name or at least the title of the person. Other ways to do this include using the website of the business or asking other people. These are small details that cаn make a big difference.

Sign It
Make sure you use a regular pen signature on the bottom of your letter. You might not be able to do this if you send the cover letter online but if it’s going to a store by mail or being delivered make sure you sign it in pen.

Neat and Correct
Make sure your cover letter is as neat as possible. You don’t want to send a document that contains any errors. Be sure to proofread the document at least 2 times before you send ot and check it again just to be sure.

Avoid Being Fancy
Don’t use cute or fancy letter paper. Plain white or business letterhead paper is perfectly fine. No employer will read a cover letter that arrives on bright pink paper with a horse at the top of the page.
